TCB must be fortified, says JS body

The parliamentary standing committee on Commerce Ministry on Thursday recommended strengthening the Trading
Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) aiming to keep the prices of essentials at a tolerable level.
Emphasising on maintaining smooth business environment in the country it suggested for determining the present and future work plan of the state-owned body, amending the policy and increasing its own power under a master plan for strengthening it.
The 36th meeting of the committee was held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee president ABM Abul Kashem in the chair, said a handout.
It discussed on the activities of the TCB, the ministry and present market situation for maintaining the prices of essential at tolerable level during the Ramadan. .
It also recommended revealing the real picture of market to the people, informing them about the availability of the products and ensuring availability of essentials in the market.
The meeting of the parliamentary watchdog body informed that TCB imported essentials of Tk 750 crore in 2011-12 fiscal year and set target to import essentials of Tk 1200 crore in 2012-13 FY.
Committee members Rumana Mahmud, M Abdul Latif and Sheikh Afil Uddin were present in the meeting. Tariff Commission chairman, TCB chairman, Tea Board chairman and senior officials of the ministry were also present.
