Khulna mayor defends Rampal coal-based power plant
Mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleq said coal based thermal power plant would not affect the environment of this area including the Sundarbans.
Addressing a mass awareness programme on the premises of Gourangbazar union Awami League office under Rampal Upzila on Wednesday the mayor said after implementing the plant massive infrastructure development would take place here.
Rampal Upazila Chairman Prof. Mollah Abdul Rouf presided over the meeting where the Mayor spoke as the chief guest.
Chief Engineer of Power Development Board Harendra Nath Mondol, Project Director MA Razzak, Executive Engineer Abdul Latif, Director of Khulna Environment Directorate Dr Tarun Kanti Sikder, consultant of the power plant Khondoker Waziullah, among others, addressed the function.
Mayor Khaleq said after implementing the project, new industries and factories would be set up in the area and employment opportunities would be created.
The government has signed an agreement with India last year to set up a coal based thermal power plant at Sapmari and Kagordaskathi area on the bank of Pashur River.
The authorities have already acquired 1834 acres of land to this end and development works for 420 acres are going on now, official sources said.
