Lightning kills 8 as they come out of mosque in Sunamganj

Eight people are feared dead and 15 to 20 others injured as lightning struck a gathering of Muslims attending Tarabih prayer at Dharmapasha in Sunamganj on Friday night.

Dharmapasha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bayes Alam said the incident took place at Sharshatipur village as Muslims were offering Tarabih, a special prayer for the Muslim’s fasting month of Ramadan, at 9:30pm.

He said he had reports that eight people were killed, and a police team was on its way to the village, a three-hour journey by engine-run boat from the police station.

Identity of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately.

Dharmapasha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahidul Islam said he heard the news of eight people dying from the lightning-struck.

He said, according to his information, two people died on the spot while the rest on their way to hospital.
