Tobacco advertisement, open smoking to face double fines
The cabinet on Monday approved the draft of Smoking and Using of Tobacco Product (Control) (Amendment) Act-2012 keeping a provision to fine Tk 1 lakh or three months imprisonment or both for running advertisement of tobacco products.
The amended act also increased the amount of fine for smoking in public place to Tk 100 from Tk 50.
All Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO) and health officers at division, district and upazila levels were given the power to impose the penalty to the offenders.
Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told this to reporters emerging from a regular cabinet meeting in Bangladesh Secretariat chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He said the aim of the act is to restrict smoking and use of tobacco in public places like educational institutions, bus stand, airport, river port, seaport, cinema hall, public toilet and transport.
During the cabinet meeting, the ministers also expressed contentment over the satisfactory law and order situation, price of essentials and load shedding during the Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.
