Obaidul Quader regrets slapping railway staff
Communications and Railways Minister Obaidul Quader has said “sorry” for slapping a train attendant while visiting a Pabna railway station on Saturday.
Quader slapped Boloram Das across the face at Ishwardi Railway Station for his poor service and irregularities.
“Although the public support is in my favour, as a responsible person, I shouldn’t have done that,” he said at a meeting with Roads and Highways Department engineers in the capital.
Later talking to The Daily Star, he referred to the Prothom Alo.com public reaction on the news and said 92 percent readers supported his action.
The minister said, “I could not hold back my emotion after seeing a poor elderly woman standing on the train with her paralised husband.”
The woman complained that the attendant asked for extra money to have a seat on the train although they bought tickets.
“Then I could not control myself and slapped the attendant when he failed to explain his undue demand of money,” Quader said.
The minister also cancelled the lease of Mahananda Express, which operates between Khulna and Chapainawabganj via Rajshahi, finding its compartments in an unhygienic state.
The minister visited the railway station around 10:15am on receiving complaints of poor service.
Quader also transferred two railway staffs and suspended one on complaints from passengers of anomalies and poor service.
